Chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland

Wanderlust Wednesdays | Bucket List Destination #1

There’s something otherworldly about the way the sky dances in Iceland. I’ve seen photos—ethereal green ribbons gliding across black velvet skies—and yet I know nothing will ever compare to standing beneath that shimmering glow in real life.

That’s why seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland is at the very top of my bucket list.

Imagine it: bundled up in your warmest layers, stepping onto a snow-covered field, and looking up to find the sky alive with movement and color. No city noise, no distractions—just the magic of nature putting on its greatest show.

📍 Why Iceland?

Iceland is one of the best places in the world to experience the aurora borealis thanks to its dark skies, wide-open landscapes, and high latitude. The remoteness of the countryside creates prime viewing conditions with minimal light pollution—whether you’re posted up in a cozy cabin or soaking in a geothermally heated pool under the stars.

🗓 Best Time to Visit

If you’re planning a trip to chase the lights, late September to mid-April is the ideal window. Winter months (especially December through February) offer the darkest skies, though road conditions can be more challenging.

For a sweet spot of visibility, weather, and daylight, October or March is your best bet.

🛏 Where to Stay

For the best chance of seeing the lights, you’ll want to stay outside of Reykjavik and away from the glow of cities. I’ve had friends visit and recommend these stays. A few dreamy options:

  • Hotel Rangá – A luxurious countryside stay known for aurora sightings and wake-up calls when the lights appear.
  • Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon – Nestled between glaciers and fjords for that truly remote feel.
  • Northern Lights Inn – Near the Blue Lagoon and away from city lights with great panoramic views.

🧭 Pro Tip: Book a Guided Tour

While it’s possible to spot the lights on your own, guided tours come with experienced drivers and real-time forecasts. Many offer rebooking if the lights don’t appear on your first attempt.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Iceland is already a dream for photographers and travelers, but adding in the Northern Lights? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience—one I hope to cross off my bucket list soon.

Until then, I’ll keep dreaming under the stars, camera in hand, ready for that moment the sky comes alive.
