During my recent getaway to Cynthiana, Kentucky, I stumbled upon something truly unexpected—an outdoor gallery of more than 30 murals tucked into the heart of this small-town gem. What started as a quick walk through downtown turned into a full-on art crawl that spanned hours—and honestly, I could’ve stayed longer.
If you love small towns with big personality, Cynthiana’s murals are a must-see.
Walking Dead in the Wild

Let’s start with the showstopper: the Walking Dead mural. This towering tribute covers the side of the historic Rohs Opera House and features beloved characters Rick, Carl, Michonne, and Daryl. Why here? Because Robert Kirkman, co-creator of The Walking Dead comic series, is a Cynthiana native. The mural, created by world-renowned artist Sérgio Odeith, is thought to be the largest Walking Dead mural in the world.
And yes—it’s even more impressive in person.
Local Legends in Paint
As I wandered around town, I spotted a larger-than-life mural of Joe B. Hall, the legendary University of Kentucky basketball coach and another Cynthiana hometown hero. His portrait is painted in Odeith’s signature 3D style and practically jumps off the wall.

From there, I found a series of vibrant works celebrating everything from Kentucky bourbon history to thoroughbred racing—including a powerful tribute to Kentucky Derby winner “Authentic,” born right here in Harrison County.

Interactive Murals and Selfie Spots
Not every piece was towering or serious. Some were delightfully playful, like the angel wings and “selfie spots” that invite you to jump into the art. These interactive elements make Cynthiana’s art scene feel alive—and meant to be explored at your own pace.

Small Town, Big Art Movement
The mural movement here started around 2016 and has taken off in the most beautiful way. Artists like Wylie Caudill and Jerielle Hanlon have poured passion into their work, blending community pride, local history, and modern flair into each piece.

It’s not just decoration—these murals tell the story of Cynthiana.
Plan Your Visit
If you’re heading to Cynthiana, wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera (you’ll want it), and give yourself time to walk the downtown loop. Nearly every block has a mural waiting to be discovered—some bold and bright, others tucked into alleys or behind buildings like hidden gems.
Pro Tip: You can pick up a free mural walking tour map just outside the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce office (located kiddie-corner from the Sweet Boutique), or download one anytime by visiting the Cynthiana Tourism website.
Whether you’re a street art lover, a history buff, or just someone who enjoys a good stroll with a side of creativity, Cynthiana will surprise you. It certainly surprised me.
