A historic theater, lantern-lit ghost stories, reported paranormal activity and one very memorable afternoon inside one of Cynthiana’s most distinctive buildings.

Quick Answer

Is the Rohs Opera House Ghost Walk in Cynthiana Worth Doing?

If you enjoy historic buildings, local folklore and paranormal stories, it is one of Cynthiana’s most distinctive experiences.

I explored Rohs Opera House during a private afternoon paranormal tour, where I heard the stories connected to the historic theater, went behind the scenes and later stayed to watch a movie in the restored auditorium.

My experience was a private tour rather than the regularly scheduled public Cynthiana Ghost Walk.

Today, the public ghost walk combines a lantern-led stroll through historic downtown Cynthiana with time inside Rohs Opera House, while private walks can also be arranged for qualifying groups.

For current movies, live events and visitor information, start with the official Rohs Opera House website. You can also explore the broader local arts scene through Cynthiana-Harrison County Tourism’s arts guide.

The Public Experience

What Is the Rohs Opera House Ghost Walk?

The Cynthiana Ghost Walk is a lantern-led walking tour that combines local history, ghost stories and a visit inside the historic Rohs Opera House.

How the Cynthiana Ghost Walk Works

The current public experience begins outside Rohs Opera House and continues through downtown Cynthiana, where guides share stories connected to several historic locations before returning to the theater.

Rohs describes the tour as approximately 60 minutes of walking through downtown followed by about 30 minutes inside the opera house.

The downtown portion covers less than a quarter mile, but guests should still be prepared to stand and walk during the experience.

Ghost Stories Without Staged Jump Scares

The tour is built around storytelling rather than staged scares. Rohs describes it as real stories about real places—not a haunted attraction with costumed actors jumping out at visitors.

You can review the latest dates, departure times and ticket availability on the official Cynthiana Ghost Walk page.

My Experience

What Was My Private Rohs Opera House Tour Like?

My Private Tour with Roger

I had the opportunity to take a private tour with Roger, one of the guides who has been connected with Rohs for years.

Exploring the theater one-on-one made the experience feel much more personal than simply walking through a historic building.

Roger shared stories about the building, Cynthiana history and paranormal experiences that visitors and ghost hunters have reported over the years.

He knew the building intimately, from the theater itself to the upper areas and hallways that most moviegoers probably never think about.

What I Personally Experienced

During my visit, I felt like there was a lot happening around us. That is my personal impression rather than something I can prove, but it definitely added to the atmosphere of exploring a historic theater already known for its ghost stories.

Reported Paranormal History

Is Rohs Opera House Really Considered Haunted?

Rohs Opera House has a long-standing paranormal reputation and openly embraces that part of its history.

The theater says it has appeared on multiple “most haunted” lists and continues to attract paranormal investigators and ghost hunters.

The Lady in White

One of the best-known stories is the Lady in White. Rohs says visitors have reported seeing a young woman in a long white dress in areas including the staircase, upstairs hallway, projection room and balcony.

Rohs has documented the story on its own website in The Lady of the Opera House.

Other Reported Paranormal Activity

During my own private tour, Roger also shared stories about footsteps, unexplained drafts, pipe-smoke scents and shadowy figures that have been reported around the building.

I treat those stories as part of the theater’s folklore and reported paranormal history rather than proof of anything supernatural.

Whether you believe them or not, they add another layer to an already fascinating historic building.

A Working Historic Theater

How Old Is Rohs Opera House?

Rohs Opera House traces its beginnings to 1871 and describes itself as the oldest continuously operating theater in Kentucky.

From Aeollian Hall to Rohs Opera House

The building began as the Aeollian Hall Music Association, with the original opera house on the second floor.

H.A. Rohs purchased Aeollian Hall in 1873 and renamed it Rohs Opera House.

A newer theater space was added in 1941. Today, Rohs remains an active entertainment venue rather than simply a preserved historic site.

You can read more about the building’s history on the official Rohs Opera House history page.

A Historic Theater That Is Still in Use

That combination is part of what makes the building interesting. You are not walking through a museum recreation—you are exploring a theater that still hosts movies, plays, concerts, comedy, special events and community performances.

The Theater Is Still Alive

Can You Still See a Movie at Rohs Opera House?

Yes. Rohs Opera House is still a working movie theater. It uses a modern digital projection system while retaining the character of the historic building.

Movies, Live Theater and Special Events

Rohs continues to host first-run movies along with live theater, concerts, comedy, magic shows and other community events. Check the official Rohs Opera House event calendar if you want to combine a ghost-focused visit with a movie or live performance.

After our paranormal tour, Roger gave us a short behind-the-scenes look at the theater itself, which gave me a much greater appreciation for the building.

Watching a Movie After My Paranormal Tour

I stayed afterward to watch a movie in the main theater. There is something special about seeing a film in a space that has held generations of performances and audiences.

During the movie, I thought I saw someone wearing old-fashioned clothing walking through the aisle. When I looked again, no one was there.

Was it something paranormal? I have no way of knowing. But after spending the afternoon hearing the theater’s ghost stories, it certainly gave me something to think about.

October Ghost Walks

When Are the Cynthiana Ghost Walks?

The regularly scheduled public Cynthiana Ghost Walks currently take place on Friday and Saturday nights throughout October.

Rohs currently lists several evening departure times, with tours beginning outside the opera house at 133 E. Pike Street.

Because October ghost walks regularly sell out, purchase tickets in advance rather than planning to arrive and buy a ticket at the last minute.

Outside the public October schedule, Rohs currently offers private walks for groups of 10 or more Monday through Thursday.

How Much Does the Cynthiana Ghost Walk Cost?

As of September 2026, Rohs Opera House lists public Cynthiana Ghost Walk tickets at $15 per person.

Can You Do a Paranormal Investigation at Rohs Opera House?

Yes. Rohs also offers separate paranormal investigations in addition to the October ghost walks.

How Paranormal Investigations Differ from the Ghost Walk

If that is what you are looking for, check the official Rohs Opera House paranormal investigation information before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rohs Opera House Ghost Walk FAQ

How long is the Cynthiana Ghost Walk?

The current public tour includes about 60 minutes walking through downtown Cynthiana and approximately 30 minutes inside Rohs Opera House.

Does the ghost walk actually go inside Rohs Opera House?

Yes. The public ghost walk starts and ends at Rohs Opera House and includes time inside the historic theater.

Is the Rohs ghost tour a haunted house?

No. Rohs describes the experience as a storytelling tour based on local history, folklore, reported paranormal experiences and real downtown locations rather than staged jump scares.

Do Cynthiana Ghost Walks sell out?

Yes, they can. Rohs advises visitors that the October walks typically sell out, so buying tickets in advance is the safest option.

The Bottom Line

Is the Rohs Opera House Ghost Walk Worth It?

For visitors who enjoy history, old theaters and paranormal folklore, Rohs Opera House offers something much more memorable than a staged Halloween attraction.

My private afternoon tour gave me a chance to hear the stories, explore the building and understand how deeply Rohs is tied to Cynthiana’s history.

Staying afterward to watch a movie made the experience even better because I could see the theater functioning as what it still is—a living part of the community.

The strange moment I experienced during the movie may have a perfectly ordinary explanation. I still do not know what I saw. But that uncertainty is part of what made the afternoon so much fun.

If this is your first Cynthiana visit, I would pair Rohs with the nearby Cynthiana Mural Walk so you can experience both the town’s historic storytelling and its modern public-art scene.

Next step: Check the current Rohs Opera House Ghost Walk schedule before planning an October visit, especially if you want a specific evening departure time.
