Explore Chattanooga’s Railway History

Missionary Ridge Local locomotive traveling through Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chattanooga’s connection to rail travel extends beyond its famous song. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum preserves that history through operating trains, historic equipment and a working restoration facility.

Missionary Ridge Local and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

Ride through a Civil War-era tunnel, watch a locomotive turntable demonstration and visit a working railroad restoration shop. My firsthand guide also explains the optional cab ride with the engineer and what to know before reserving it.

Lookout Mountain Attractions

Ruby Falls illuminated inside the cavern beneath Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga.

Lookout Mountain is home to two of Chattanooga’s best-known attractions. Ruby Falls takes visitors beneath the mountain, while the Incline Railway provides a steep scenic ride and expansive views from above.

Ruby Falls

Follow a guided cave route to a 145-foot underground waterfall illuminated with colorful lights. My guide covers the elevator descent, cave conditions, crowds, photography challenges and why advance reservations are important.

The Incline Railway

Ride between historic St. Elmo and the top of Lookout Mountain while photographing the steep track, surrounding landscape and city views. This guide includes seating suggestions, camera tips and creative photo ideas for the journey.

Museums and Downtown Chattanooga

Rows of illuminated pinball machines inside the Chattanooga Pinball Museum.

Downtown Chattanooga works well for a flexible afternoon because several attractions, restaurants and colorful stops are close enough to combine without moving your car.

Chattanooga Pinball Museum

Pay one admission and play a large collection of vintage and modern pinball machines and arcade games. This firsthand review explains the museum’s nostalgic atmosphere, re-entry option and appeal for adults, families and rainy-day visits.

Pizza, Pinball and Public Art

Use this ready-made downtown outing to combine the Pinball Museum, pizza at Lupi’s Pizza Pies and a nearby mural. It is an easy option when you want several experiences without creating a complicated itinerary.

Rocket Fizz

Browse retro candy, unusual soda flavors and nostalgic gifts at this colorful downtown shop near the Pinball Museum. It works best as a short add-on rather than a separate destination.

Murals and Photography Stops

Painted Chattanooga landscape featuring the Tennessee River, bridges, mountain and city skyline, signed by Ragan Smith and Olivia Reckert.

Chattanooga rewards travelers who slow down and look beyond its major attractions. The Southside is especially useful for combining railway architecture, murals and short photography stops.

Murals at the Chattanooga Choo Choo

Explore 12 murals painted across doors and recessed panels behind the historic Terminal Station. The collection mixes Chattanooga scenery, fantasy imagery and pop-culture references, making it an easy addition to a Southside visit.

Kinley Hotel’s Communal Kaleidoscope

Photograph this colorful exterior mural by Chattanooga artists Alecia Buckles and Briah Gober from across Market Street at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. It takes only a few minutes to add to your visit and does not require entering the hotel.

Food and River Experiences

Chattanooga’s restaurants and riverfront experiences can become part of the itinerary rather than separate stops. Pair The Tap House with the Incline Railway, choose Champy’s for Southern comfort food or end a downtown day on the Tennessee River.

The Tap House in St. Elmo

Located near the lower Incline Railway station, The Tap House offers a relaxed setting, rotating drinks and distinctive industrial-style architecture. Its location makes it convenient before or after an Incline Railway ride.

Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken

Try fried-to-order chicken, Mississippi Delta hot tamales and traditional Southern sides in a casual Chattanooga setting filled with colorful memorabilia.

Southern Belle Riverboat

See Chattanooga from the Tennessee River on a sightseeing, sunset or dining cruise. My firsthand experience covers the onboard atmosphere, river views and photography opportunities along the route.

How to Spend Two or Three Days in Chattanooga

Chattanooga offers more than most travelers can comfortably experience in one weekend. Group attractions by area and reserve only the experiences that matter most to you.

Day One: Lookout Mountain and St. Elmo

Begin with a reserved tour at Ruby Falls. Afterward, travel to St. Elmo for the Incline Railway and spend time enjoying the views and taking photographs. Finish with a relaxed meal or drink at The Tap House near the lower station.

Day Two: Railway History and the Southside

Ride the Missionary Ridge Local and explore the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in the morning. Later, visit the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo, photograph its courtyard murals and see the Kinley Hotel mural across Market Street. Consider Champy’s for a casual Southern meal.

Day Three: Downtown and the Tennessee River

Spend the morning or early afternoon at the Chattanooga Pinball Museum. Walk across the street for pizza at Lupi’s, then add the nearby mural and Rocket Fizz. Finish the trip with a reserved sightseeing or sunset cruise aboard the Southern Belle.

If You Only Have Two Days

Keep the first day focused on Lookout Mountain. On the second day, choose either the Missionary Ridge Local or the Pinball Museum as your primary attraction, then add the Chattanooga Choo Choo murals and a riverboat cruise if reservation times allow.

Know Before You Go

Transportation

A car is the most practical way to travel between Lookout Mountain, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, downtown and the Southside. Once parked downtown or near the Chattanooga Choo Choo, several restaurants, murals and attractions can be reached on foot.

Parking

Parking arrangements vary by attraction. Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum have their own nearby parking options, while downtown and Southside visits may require a paid lot, garage or metered space. Read posted restrictions and allow extra time before reserved tours or cruises.

Safety

Use the same precautions you would in any city: stay aware of your surroundings, choose well-lit routes after dark and avoid leaving cameras or other valuables visible inside your vehicle. Wear supportive shoes for cave paths, hills and extended downtown walking.

Accessibility

Accessibility varies significantly among Chattanooga’s historic and natural attractions:

  • The Ruby Falls cavern is not wheelchair or stroller accessible because of narrow natural passages and small groups of steps. The standard cave experience involves approximately one mile of walking and about 50 steps. Review Ruby Falls’ current accessibility guidance before booking.
  • The Incline Railway currently permits manual and electric wheelchairs in its redesigned railcars. Confirm current boarding details through the Incline Railway FAQ.
  • The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum advises that its historic railcars have limited accessibility. Contact the museum before reserving a train ride if assistance or specific accommodations are needed.
  • Riverboat access can vary by vessel, deck and cruise type. Contact the Southern Belle directly before booking to discuss mobility needs.
  • Travelers with limited stamina should avoid scheduling Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway and extensive downtown walking on the same day.
