Travel Guide

London can feel overwhelming when you begin planning your first visit. There are famous landmarks, historic churches, royal sites, theaters, museums, parks, pubs and countless neighborhoods competing for space on your itinerary.

I spent nine days in London with my brother on my first visit to the city, with one day reserved for a train trip to Brussels. Our priorities included famous landmarks, West End productions, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter and traditional pubs.

This page brings together my firsthand London stories, photography guides and practical planning observations. Use it as a starting point, then follow the links to the individual articles for photographs and more detailed information about each experience.

Quick Answer

Is London a good destination for a first-time international traveler?

Based on my first visit, yes. London was easy to explore using a combination of walking and the Underground, and seven to nine days gives first-time visitors enough time to experience major landmarks, historic sites, theater, parks and neighborhoods without trying to fit everything into just a few days.

Before You Go

Planning Your First London Visit

A longer first visit gave us time to adjust after the international flight, explore at a comfortable pace and use one well-connected hotel as our base.

How Long to Stay

Nine days felt right for our first visit. The longer stay gave us time to adjust after the international flight, explore without rushing and enjoy the trip before facing the flight home. Travelers with less time can still experience London, but choosing priorities becomes especially important.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at The Clermont London, Victoria. Its location beside Victoria Station made it easy to use the Underground, walk to both theaters and reach several major landmarks.

Our room was large, quiet and comfortable, and the staff helped us estimate travel times and find nearby pubs and restaurants.

Getting Around London

We walked extensively and used the Underground for longer journeys. Our Oyster cards were easy to use, and local people were kind whenever we needed directions.

First-time visitors should expect stairs, fast-moving commuters and crowded stations during busier parts of the day. Travelers with mobility concerns can review current step-free access information through Transport for London.

My Best Planning Advice

London also felt safer and more affordable than I expected. Nothing stood out as unreasonably expensive during our trip, although costs will vary according to accommodations, attractions, dining preferences and theater seats.

My most important advice is simple: do your homework. Ask friends who have visited for their recommendations, reserve priority attractions in advance and consider guided experiences when historical context would improve the visit.

What worked especially well for us: choosing accommodations beside a major transportation hub and reserving the experiences that mattered most before leaving home.
Through My Camera

London Architecture & Hidden Details

London’s architecture became one of my favorite photography subjects. Famous landmarks provide the initial attraction, but decorative stonework, historic entrances, ornamental gates and details above eye level reveal another side of the city.

Photography Tip

Look Beyond the Famous Landmarks

Some of my favorite photographs came from slowing down, looking upward and noticing details that were not necessarily on our sightseeing list.

Carvings, repeating patterns, reflections, doorways, gates and architectural textures made simply walking through London part of the photography experience.

Music History

A Different Side of London

London offers music lovers experiences that extend beyond concerts. One of my favorite finds was located inside the original Hard Rock Cafe London complex near Hyde Park.

Experience Traditional London Pub Culture

Between London’s major landmarks, make time for the everyday places that give the city its character. Traditional pubs combine British food, conversation, historic-style interiors and details worth noticing through a camera lens.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting London for the First Time

Seven to nine days gives you time to see London’s major landmarks while also exploring parks, neighborhoods and attractions at a more comfortable pace. Shorter trips are possible, but you’ll need to be more selective about what you include.

Is the London Underground easy to use for first-time visitors?

I found the Underground easy to navigate during my first trip. It was my primary transportation around London, combined with walking between attractions that were close together.

Do you need a car when visiting London?

No. I did not need a car for sightseeing in London. Walking and the Underground made it possible to reach the places on my itinerary without dealing with driving or parking.

Is London good for solo travelers?

London can work well for independent travelers because many major attractions are connected by the Underground and are easy to combine with walking. Although I traveled to London with my brother on this visit, I was comfortable navigating the city and its public transportation independently when needed.
