U.S. Weekend Getaways

Planning a weekend getaway does not have to begin with a complicated itinerary or a cross-country flight. Sometimes the right destination is a city, mountain community or roadside attraction that can be explored over two or three days.

This guide brings together U.S. weekend getaways and road-trip destinations I have personally visited. Some trips were solo adventures, while others were shared with my brother, friends or family. Every destination offers a different combination of attractions, history, food, photography and local character.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of every weekend destination in the country. It is a growing collection of places I can recommend from firsthand experience, supported by detailed Lenses & Latitudes guides and reviews.

Transportation note: “Yes” means a car is recommended for exploring the destination. “Optional” means you can enjoy many central attractions without a car, although having one makes it easier to visit surrounding areas. For multi-city destinations, a car may still be needed to travel between communities.

General planning information and cost levels were reviewed in September 2026. “Budget,” “Moderate” and “Higher” are relative comparisons—not fixed trip prices. Lodging, fuel, parking and admission costs vary by season and travel style.

Kentucky

Kentucky Weekend Getaways

Jockey seated on a racehorse being led by two handlers near the paddock at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.
Lexington, Kentucky

Horses, Museums and Local Culture

Lexington works well for travelers who want a flexible city getaway combining horse culture, museums, arts, restaurants and evening entertainment. A car makes it easier to travel between downtown Lexington, Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Park and attractions near Blue Grass Airport.

Start with my Lexington, Kentucky Travel Guide to compare itineraries, equestrian experiences, museums, cultural attractions, live music, hidden bars and practical airport information. Allow two or three days for an unhurried visit.

Firsthand note: Because Lexington offers many standalone attractions, it is easy to build a weekend around your interests rather than following one rigid itinerary.

Cynthiana, Kentucky

Art and Small-Town Character

Cynthiana is a manageable one- or two-day destination for travelers who enjoy murals, historic architecture, locally owned businesses and compact downtown exploration.

My Cynthiana artsy road-trip guide provides the best starting point. It can be combined with a visit to the historic Rohs Opera House and breakfast or coffee at Sweet Boutique.

Firsthand note: Cynthiana works especially well for a slower outing because several of its most interesting details can be found simply by walking, looking at the buildings and paying attention to the artwork around town.

Louisville + Central Kentucky

History, Horses and Nature

Louisville offers enough museums, historic attractions, dining and riverfront experiences for a full weekend. Travelers interested in Kentucky’s equine heritage can experience Churchill Downs outside Derby week.

For an outdoor addition, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum provides trails, art and nature south of Louisville. Because these attractions are spread across the region, a car is the most practical option.

Firsthand note: Central Kentucky makes it possible to combine a city experience with horses, history and nature without committing the entire weekend to one type of activity.

Ohio

Ohio and Cincinnati-Area Getaways

Cincinnati · Reading · Loveland

History, Public Art and Unexpected Discoveries

Southwest Ohio can support a weekend centered on history, architecture, restaurants, public art or unusual attractions. Start with my Cincinnati and Southwest Ohio Weekend Guide to combine Cincinnati, Reading and Loveland into a practical two- or three-day itinerary.

For a memorable evening experience, read my Cincinnati Dinner Train review for my firsthand experience with the dinner, vintage railcars, live entertainment, seating and what to know before booking. Travelers interested in architecture and local history can also visit Loveland Castle.

Reading, Ohio, offers an easy cluster of local discoveries. I originally visited for Strong’s Brick Oven Pizzeria and then found the Love Blooms mural and the nearby UNO mural.

Firsthand note: This area rewards travelers who leave extra time around a planned meal or attraction. Several of my most interesting discoveries happened because I looked across the street or walked a little farther than expected.

Tennessee

Tennessee Weekend Getaways

Pigeon Forge · Gatlinburg · Smokies

Mountains, Attractions and Family Adventures

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg combine mountain scenery with a large concentration of attractions, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. A car is useful for reaching the region, although traffic and parking can add time during busy periods.

Start with my Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Smoky Mountains weekend guide to compare attractions, restaurants and outdoor experiences across the region. For a nature-focused visit, use my Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee travel guide to find scenic and historic stops beyond the busiest areas.

Pigeon Forge offers everything from The Island and the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel to dinner shows, miniature golf, shops and distinctive restaurants.

In Gatlinburg, activities such as Hillbilly Golf and the Moonshine Mountain Coaster can be combined with time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Firsthand note: The hardest part of planning a Smokies getaway is narrowing the choices. Select one or two priority attractions and leave room for mountain scenery, photography and stops you discover along the way.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Trains, Scenic Attractions and Creative Stops

Chattanooga works well for a two- or three-day getaway. Its mix of historic transportation, mountain attractions, museums, public art and restaurants makes it suitable for families, couples, friends and solo travelers.

Start with my Chattanooga Weekend Guide to compare the city’s major areas, choose between its attractions and build a realistic two- or three-day itinerary.

Railroad enthusiasts can ride the Missionary Ridge Local or explore the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo. Behind the station, I discovered a courtyard collection of 12 Chattanooga Choo Choo murals.

Other options include Ruby Falls, the Chattanooga Pinball Museum and the Incline Railway. My Incline Railway photography guide can help you prepare for the views.

Firsthand note: Chattanooga offers enough variety to keep the weekend interesting without requiring long drives between every experience.

Georgia

Georgia Road Trips

Lake Oconee · Madison · Eatonton · Jackson

Small Towns, Wildlife and Local Dining

Lake Oconee and the surrounding communities of Madison, Eatonton and Jackson can be combined into a flexible Georgia road trip featuring lakeside getaways, wildlife experiences, historic sites, filming locations, museums and memorable local restaurants.

Around Lake Oconee, dining is part of the experience, whether you’re looking for a relaxed local meal at Lake Oconee Bistro or a more elevated dinner at Italian Chophouse on Lake Oconee.

In Madison, the Georgia Safari Conservation Park offers an experience built around wildlife viewing and conservation education, while The Patisserie on Main makes an inviting stop for breakfast, lunch or something sweet while exploring the historic downtown.

Eatonton can include the Uncle Remus Museum, a meal at Lake Oconee Bistro or a casual stop at The Tipsy Turtle.

Fans of film and television can use my Stranger Things filming-location guide to explore Jackson and other recognizable Georgia locations.

Firsthand note: Traveling between smaller communities revealed how much variety exists outside Georgia’s largest cities. A car is essential, but the drive becomes part of the experience.

Road Trip Territory

Route 66 and Central U.S. Road Trips

Illinois and Missouri Route 66

A full Route 66 journey requires more than a weekend, but individual segments can become satisfying two- or three-day road trips.

My first day traveling toward St. Louis included roadside attractions, murals and places that were not originally part of the plan. Follow the route in Day 1: Route 66 Roadside Attractions and Murals.

The Pink Elephant Antique Mall is one example of the colorful roadside stops that make the journey as memorable as the destination.

In nearby Granite City, Illinois, I explored colorful Route 66 murals, It’s Electric Neon Sign Park, the Make-It Toy Monument and the giant Fork in the Road. See my Granite City murals and roadside attractions guide for original photographs and ideas for adding these photo stops to an Illinois Route 66 itinerary.

Firsthand note: Route 66 works best when the schedule includes extra time. The unplanned stops and roadside photographs frequently became some of my favorite parts of the trip.

St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis combines major landmarks, distinctive museums, historic architecture and unusual lodging choices.

The Gateway Arch tram offers the city’s most recognizable experience, while City Museum provides an unconventional combination of art, architecture, tunnels, slides and interactive spaces.

For lodging with a strong sense of place, The Cheshire offers an English-inspired alternative to a standard hotel.

Firsthand note: St. Louis deserves at least two full days. City Museum alone can occupy a substantial part of one day, while the Arch and surrounding historic sites can anchor another.

Wichita, Kansas

Wildlife, Historic Districts and Dining

Wichita can support a weekend built around wildlife, historic districts and local dining.

For animal lovers, Tanganyika Wildlife Park can become the centerpiece of the trip. My visit included close wildlife experiences that justified spending more than one day at the park.

Stay in the historic district at Hotel at Old Town and consider dinner at Public at the Brickyard.

Firsthand note: Wichita was originally added because of one wildlife attraction, but the historic district, lodging and dining gave the destination enough depth for a longer stay.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Art, Entertainment and Urban Exploration

Oklahoma City offers museums, public art, entertainment districts and creative attractions.

Factory Obscura became one of the most visually engaging stops on my road trip. Its immersive rooms, textures and colors made it especially interesting from a photography perspective.

Bricktown can add restaurants, canal views and evening entertainment to the itinerary.

Firsthand note: Oklahoma City works well as both a standalone getaway and a stop on a longer central-U.S. road trip.

Arkansas

Little Rock, Arkansas

History, Architecture and Southern Hospitality

Little Rock combines presidential history, architecture, local restaurants and distinctive lodging.

The William J. Clinton Presidential Center can anchor a history-focused day. My visit reinforced why travelers should consider visiting a presidential library, even if presidential museums are not normally part of their itineraries.

For a memorable stay, The Empress of Little Rock offers historic architecture and Victorian character. A meal at Dugan’s Pub can add a relaxed local stop.

Firsthand note: Little Rock delivered more history and architectural interest than I anticipated, making it a strong final stop during a longer road trip.

Looking for accommodations that become part of the adventure? During our Midwest road trip, we stayed at three distinctive historic properties in St. Louis, Wichita and Little Rock. Compare the architecture, atmosphere and experiences in my guide to unique places to stay on a Midwest road trip—ideas that can inspire individual weekend getaways, too.

Travel Smart

Safety and Accessibility Considerations

I have explored these destinations under different circumstances—sometimes alone and sometimes with other travelers. Feeling comfortable during one visit does not guarantee that conditions will always be the same.

Before leaving:

  • Review current neighborhood, weather and road information.
  • Tell someone where you are going when traveling alone.
  • Park in designated, well-lit areas.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Verify attraction accessibility directly with the venue.
  • Consider walking distances, stairs, uneven terrain and transportation between stops.
  • Avoid overpacking an itinerary if anyone in your group needs additional rest or mobility accommodations.

Accessibility varies considerably. A downtown museum, mountain trail, historic building and wildlife park may present very different mobility needs.

Before leaving, review the NHTSA’s road-trip safety tips, check your vehicle and confirm the weather, road conditions and planned route.

Match the Trip to You

How to Choose the Right Weekend Getaway

Begin with the amount of time you actually have. A closer destination with two unhurried days may be more enjoyable than spending most of the weekend driving toward a farther city.

Ask yourself:

  • How many nights can I stay?
  • Do I want a city, mountain, small-town or roadside experience?
  • Who is traveling with me?
  • Does anyone have mobility or accessibility needs?
  • Do I prefer free exploration or ticketed attractions?
  • What is my comfortable total budget?
  • How much driving do I want to do?
  • What one experience matters most?

Choose one priority attraction and build the rest of the getaway around it. This approach helped shape several of my own road trips and left room for discoveries that never appeared on the original itinerary.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions About U.S. Weekend Getaways

How many days do you need for a weekend getaway?

Two or three days is enough for many weekend getaways, especially when you choose a destination within a manageable driving distance or take a short flight. A long weekend gives you additional time to explore without trying to fit too many attractions into each day.

How do you choose a destination for a weekend trip?

Start with how much time you have and how far you are willing to travel. Then consider what you want from the trip, such as history, outdoor activities, food, photography, attractions or a relaxing small-town escape. Choosing a destination that matches your priorities usually creates a better weekend than trying to fit too much into a short trip.

Are road trips good for weekend getaways?

Yes. Road trips work especially well for weekend getaways when the destination is close enough that driving does not consume most of your available time. Traveling by car can also make it easier to explore attractions, small towns and photo stops outside a city center.

Are the weekend getaways on this page based on firsthand experience?

Yes. The destinations featured in this guide are places I have personally visited. I use my own travel experiences, photographs and observations to help you compare destinations and decide which type of weekend getaway may fit your trip.
