Hotel at Old Town: A Home Away From Home in Wichita’s Historic Old Town

Published in the Lenses & Latitudes 2026 Midwest Road Trip Series

After three incredible days on the road, we finally crossed into Kansas.

Our journey had already taken us through St. Louis, Route 66, Springfield, and several spontaneous stops that completely reshaped our itinerary. By the time we arrived in Wichita, we were ready for a comfortable place to recharge before spending the next two days exploring Tanganyika Wildlife Park.

What I didn’t expect was that our hotel would become one of my favorite parts of Wichita.

From the moment we pulled into Hotel at Old Town, I realized this wasn’t going to be another typical hotel stay. What I found was a welcoming historic property that perfectly blended industrial charm, modern comfort, exceptional hospitality, and one of the best locations in Wichita.

It quickly became our home away from home.

A Warm Welcome in the Heart of Old Town

When I first pulled into Hotel at Old Town, my immediate thought was…

“This is much bigger than I expected.”

The restored warehouse architecture immediately caught my attention.

Instead of feeling like a converted industrial building, it felt warm, inviting, and full of personality.

Walking through the front doors only reinforced that first impression.

The lobby perfectly balances historic character with modern comfort. Exposed brick, rich architectural details, comfortable seating areas, and a relaxed atmosphere immediately make you feel welcome.

If I had to describe Hotel at Old Town in only three words, they would be:

Historic. Charming. Comfortable.

It doesn’t feel like checking into another chain hotel.

It feels like arriving somewhere with a story.

The Atrium That Stole the Show

Every hotel has hallways.

Very few have an atrium that makes you stop walking, reach for your camera, and simply admire the space.

The soaring central atrium quickly became my favorite feature of the entire hotel.

Natural light pours through the upper windows, balconies overlook the open space, and beautiful architectural lines draw your eyes upward from every floor.

As a travel photographer, I knew immediately this would become my favorite subject.

I probably photographed the atrium more than any other part of the hotel.

Every angle looked different.

Every floor provided another perspective.

The historical displays located throughout the hotel added even more character, giving guests a glimpse into the building’s past while celebrating Wichita’s history.

Hotel at Old Town isn’t simply preserving a historic building.

It’s celebrating it.

Spacious Rooms Designed for Comfort

Our double queen room overlooked the atrium and included a private balcony.

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the décor.

It was the size.

There was room to spread out, unpack, relax, and actually enjoy being in the room.

The balcony itself isn’t designed for lounging, but it provides one of the best views of the atrium and became another favorite photography location during our stay.

Then there were the beds.

I’ll admit…

I’m a bit of a bed snob.

After hundreds of hotel nights over the years, I’ve become pretty particular about a comfortable mattress.

These beds were outstanding.

Combined with how incredibly quiet the hotel was, I enjoyed one of the best nights of sleep during our entire nine-day road trip.

I never heard neighboring guests.

I never heard street traffic.

Even though the hotel sits in the heart of Wichita’s Historic Old Town, it was remarkably peaceful, allowing us to recharge before another full day of adventure.

For me, that’s the perfect combination—a beautiful historic hotel with all the charm of a boutique property and all the comfort of home.

The Perfect Home Base for Exploring Wichita

Location can make or break a hotel stay.

Hotel at Old Town couldn’t be better positioned.

Nestled in Wichita’s Historic Old Town district, the hotel is surrounded by restaurants, breweries, entertainment venues, and beautifully restored historic buildings. It quickly became apparent that this wasn’t an area designed to simply drive through—it was meant to be explored on foot.

On our second evening, we enjoyed an easy walk to dinner at Public at the Brickyard, taking in the character of Old Town along the way.

One of the things I appreciated most about the neighborhood was that it felt authentic. Rather than being overdeveloped or touristy, Historic Old Town has preserved its character while becoming one of Wichita’s most vibrant districts.

Every block seemed to offer another interesting restaurant, local business, or beautifully restored building.

Even though we only had a short time to explore, I left wishing we had planned an extra day just to wander through Old Town.

That’s always a good sign.

Free Covered Parking…Then Leave the Car Behind

One feature that deserves special mention is the complimentary covered parking garage located immediately next to the hotel.

Parking couldn’t have been easier.

After checking in, we rarely needed the car.

Instead, we simply walked to dinner and enjoyed exploring the surrounding neighborhood.

For travelers who don’t enjoy constantly searching for parking downtown, this is a tremendous benefit.

An Outstanding Base Camp for Tanganyika Wildlife Park

One of the reasons we selected Hotel at Old Town was its location relative to Tanganyika Wildlife Park.

The drive takes only about twenty minutes, making it incredibly convenient while still allowing visitors to enjoy everything Wichita has to offer after leaving the park.

Rather than staying in a generic interstate hotel closer to the highway, we were able to spend our evenings immersed in Wichita’s Historic Old Town before heading back to a spacious, quiet room.

It was the best of both worlds.

If you’re planning a visit to Tanganyika Wildlife Park, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hotel at Old Town as your home base.

Hospitality That Makes All the Difference

Beautiful hotels are easy to find.

Exceptional hospitality is much harder.

Our experience actually began before we ever arrived.

Renee made coordinating our hosted stay simple and stress-free, answering questions quickly and making us feel genuinely excited about our visit.

That same level of hospitality continued throughout our stay.

Every staff member we encountered greeted us with a smile, offered assistance when needed, and made us feel less like customers and more like welcomed guests.

In an era where many hotels feel transactional, Hotel at Old Town reminded me how much exceptional customer service still matters.

It’s one of those qualities that can’t be photographed—but you’ll remember it long after you’ve checked out.

A Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

Each morning began with a complimentary breakfast that offered something for everyone.

The buffet included both continental favorites and hot breakfast selections, along with fresh fruit, pastries, cereal, yogurt, coffee, and juice.

One thing that stood out to me was the juice.

It actually tasted freshly squeezed rather than the overly sweet juice concentrate that many hotels serve.

It may seem like a small detail, but little touches like that contribute to the feeling that Hotel at Old Town genuinely cares about the guest experience.

After breakfast, we were energized and ready for another full day of exploring Wichita.

Final Thoughts

As I looked back on our stay, I realized something.

Hotel at Old Town reminded me that historic districts don’t mean old and run down.

They mean adventure.

They mean character.

They mean discovering places with stories worth telling.

Throughout our Midwest road trip, we intentionally sought out destinations with personality—places that couldn’t be replicated anywhere else. Hotel at Old Town fit that philosophy perfectly.

It wasn’t simply where we slept.

It became part of our Wichita experience.

Between the beautiful historic architecture, spacious rooms, incredibly comfortable beds, welcoming atmosphere, and exceptional customer service, this hotel offered something many larger chain hotels simply can’t replicate.

It felt personal.

It felt inviting.

Most of all…

It felt like home.

❤️ Why I’d Stay Again

Would I stay here again?

Without hesitation.

In fact, if I return to Wichita—and I fully intend to—I won’t spend time researching where to stay.

I’ll simply book Hotel at Old Town again.

The combination of location, hospitality, room size, historic charm, and comfort makes it one of my favorite hotels from our entire Midwest road trip.

For me, the best hotels become part of the destination rather than simply supporting it.

Hotel at Old Town did exactly that.
