Quick Answer

Is Italian Chophouse on Lake Oconee Worth It?

Yes. Based on my experience, Italian Chophouse is particularly well suited for date nights, celebrations, business dinners and travelers who want one meal during a Lake Oconee getaway to feel a little more special.

Finding the right restaurant can make a Lake Oconee getaway feel a little more special—especially when you’re looking for something beyond a casual dinner.

I visited during a September trip to Georgia’s Lake Country after the owner, who also owns Lake Oconee Bistro, invited me to experience his Italian Chophouse as well.

I arrived around 5:30 p.m., just as the evening was beginning to pick up. The bar was already lively for Happy Hour, while the dining room was still relatively quiet. By the time I finished dinner, tables had filled and the restaurant had settled into a busy evening service.

This was my first visit, and I quickly understood why I’ve since found myself recommending it for date nights, special occasions and elevated dinners at Lake Oconee.

And for fellow solo travelers, there’s another detail worth mentioning: despite the upscale setting, I felt completely comfortable dining here alone.

First Impressions

An Upscale Lake Oconee Atmosphere

From the moment I walked inside Italian Chophouse on Lake Oconee, the atmosphere felt polished and upscale without being overly formal. I was greeted immediately by the hostess and seated right away in a booth across from the bar—a spot I chose because it gave me a good view of the restaurant as dinner service began.

One of the first things that caught my attention was the glass-enclosed, temperature-controlled wine display near the entrance. Filled with bottles from floor to ceiling, it creates an impressive introduction before you even reach the dining room.

The restaurant blends elements of a contemporary steakhouse with an upscale Italian restaurant. Warm gold tones, dark accents, upholstered booths, modern artwork, soft lighting and carefully set tables give the dining room an elegant feel. A fireplace adds another warm focal point, while the bar provides a livelier contrast to the quieter dining area.

At 5:30 p.m., the bar was already busy and moderately lively, while the dining room was still fairly quiet. More guests arrived throughout my meal, but I found the overall noise level comfortable.

The atmosphere feels designed for an evening when dinner itself is part of the occasion. What stood out to me as a solo traveler was how comfortable I felt dining there alone.

What I Ordered

Shrimp Scampi Was the Star of My Dinner

Although the menu includes steaks, chops, seafood and Italian favorites, I knew exactly where I wanted to start. I skipped an appetizer and ordered the shrimp scampi, along with an unsweetened iced tea.

While I waited for my entrée, a basket of bread arrived with seasoned olive oil for dipping. It was a simple start to the meal and gave me a chance to settle in, enjoy the atmosphere and watch the restaurant begin to fill for dinner.

My shrimp scampi arrived with jumbo shrimp sautéed with garlic, white wine, lemon butter and herbs, served over linguine. A grilled lemon and thick slice of toasted bread completed the plate.

The shrimp were cooked perfectly—tender rather than tough or rubbery—and this was easily the standout dish of my dinner. The portion was generous, with plenty of shrimp over the linguine.

I wasn’t able to finish everything, although part of that was intentional: I already had dessert in mind. The leftovers came home with me, and I would absolutely order the shrimp scampi again.

If you’re visiting Italian Chophouse for the first time and enjoy seafood and pasta, this is an entrée I can confidently recommend based on my experience.

Save Room

New York-Style Cheesecake

Saving room for dessert turned out to be a very good decision.

I finished dinner with the New York-style cheesecake, and it was easily one of the best cheesecakes I’ve had. It was creamy and rich without being overly sweet—the kind of dessert that feels indulgent without becoming too heavy after a full meal.

The presentation was just as impressive, with the cheesecake served over a decorative swirl of chocolate and caramel sauces.

Like the shrimp scampi, the portion was generous. I couldn’t finish the entire slice and ended up taking part of the cheesecake home along with my entrée leftovers. It could easily be shared, especially after a full dinner.

Then again, you may not want to share it.

If cheesecake is your dessert of choice, this is one I’d happily order again. Whatever you decide on for dinner, my advice is simple: save room for dessert.

The Experience

Attentive Service Without Feeling Rushed

Good service can shape an entire dining experience, particularly at a restaurant positioned for special occasions, and the service throughout my dinner at Italian Chophouse struck the right balance.

From the moment I arrived, everyone I encountered was friendly and welcoming. I was greeted and seated immediately, and throughout the meal the service remained attentive without becoming overbearing.

That mattered because I wasn’t in a hurry. I spent about an hour and a half over dinner, taking my time with each course and simply enjoying the experience. Even as the restaurant became busier, I never felt rushed to finish or give up my table.

The general managers from both Italian Chophouse and Lake Oconee Bistro also took time to introduce themselves, speak with me and answer my questions during my hosted visits. Although the owner who invited me was out of town, I appreciated the personal welcome from his team.

Value

Is Italian Chophouse Worth the Price?

For me, Italian Chophouse falls into the moderately expensive category and feels best suited for a date night, special occasion, business dinner or simply an evening when you want something a little more elevated.

That said, Lake Oconee is an affluent resort community, and the pricing may feel fairly moderate compared with other upscale dining options in the area.

More importantly, I felt the overall experience surpassed the price point. Between the quality and portion size of my shrimp scampi, the cheesecake, attentive service and upscale atmosphere, the restaurant delivered more than just a nice-looking dining room.

Would I return and pay for dinner myself? Absolutely.

For my own casual meals around Lake Oconee, I tend to gravitate toward the more laid-back atmosphere at Lake Oconee Bistro. Italian Chophouse fills a different role.

This is where I’d send someone looking for a romantic dinner, celebrating something special, entertaining a business associate or wanting a more elevated meal during a Lake Oconee getaway.

Solo Travel

Is Italian Chophouse Good for Solo Dining?

Based on my experience, yes. I dined alone in a booth rather than at the bar and felt completely comfortable.

Although Italian Chophouse immediately struck me as a restaurant I’d recommend for date nights and special occasions, I wouldn’t hesitate to return on my own.

Upscale restaurants can sometimes feel geared almost exclusively toward couples or groups, but I never felt out of place dining solo.

The staff played a big part in that experience. They were welcoming and attentive without hovering, and no one made me feel rushed even though I spent about an hour and a half enjoying my meal.

If you’re visiting Lake Oconee alone and want something more elevated than a casual dinner, don’t let the special-occasion atmosphere keep you from making a reservation.
