Tips for Photographing Murals with a Smartphone
- Clean the lens first. A quick wipe removes fingerprints and haze that can reduce detail and color.
- Start with the entire mural. Step back when it is safe to do so and use the standard 1× camera before trying close-up details.
- Keep the phone parallel to the wall. Turn on the camera grid and use the building’s edges to keep the mural from appearing tilted or distorted.
- Control the exposure. Tap the mural on the screen to set focus, then lower the exposure slightly if bright areas are losing color or detail.
- Watch the surroundings. Look for parked cars, harsh shadows, reflections, traffic, and private-property boundaries before choosing your position.

Plan a Trip Around Public Art
- Choose a destination. Use the map to identify one mural or a small group of photo stops you want to visit.
- Verify the details. Confirm the location, public access, parking, and current condition before making a special trip.
- Build the surrounding itinerary. Combine the artwork with nearby restaurants, museums, shops, parks, or attractions so the mural becomes part of a complete outing.
- Allow time to explore safely. Leave room for walking, changing light, traffic, and discoveries you may notice between planned stops.
