One of the highlights of our evening had nothing to do with dinner. We spent nearly 40 minutes talking with owner Don Dugan, and it quickly became clear that Dugan’s is much more than another neighborhood restaurant.
Don’s passion for Ireland is immediately obvious. After years in the restaurant industry, he dreamed of creating more than another neighborhood pub. He wanted to build an authentic Irish gathering place for Little Rock’s large Irish community while sharing the warmth and hospitality that make Irish pubs so memorable. As someone of Irish descent himself, that dream eventually became Dugan’s Pub.
What impressed me most wasn’t just his knowledge of the restaurant business—it was how genuine he was. He spoke passionately about his staff, his customers, and his desire to deliver exceptional service alongside an authentic Irish experience. Every detail of the restaurant reflects that commitment. It’s the kind of conversation you rarely have in today’s restaurant world, and one that made our evening even more memorable.
Dinner Done Right
When it came time to order, we kept things simple. I chose the hand-battered chicken tenders with fries, while my brother, Craig, ordered the fish and chips. Neither of us had room for appetizers or dessert because the portions were incredibly generous.
My chicken tenders were perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and clearly made from scratch rather than pulled from a freezer. Meanwhile, Craig couldn’t stop talking about the fish and chips. Having recently traveled to Ireland, he said they reminded him of some of the best fish and chips he’d eaten overseas. That’s about as high a compliment as an Irish pub can receive.
