Think about your favorite travel memory for a moment.
Chances are, it wasn’t the perfectly planned itinerary or the hotel room you booked months in advance. It was the unexpected turn down a quiet back road, the conversation with a local stranger, the adventure you almost talked yourself out of, or the moment you decided to say “yes” even though it felt a little uncomfortable.
That’s where the best stories begin.
Comfort zones are familiar, predictable, and safe—but they rarely change us. Growth happens when we take the scenic route instead of the quickest one, try the local restaurant instead of the chain we already know, or step into a destination we’ve never explored before. Every new experience adds another chapter to our story and reminds us that the world is far bigger—and far more welcoming—than we often imagine.
Some of my most unforgettable adventures happened because I embraced the unexpected. I’ve fed a lion at Tanganyika Wildlife Park, wandered through immersive art installations that challenged my creativity, explored hidden murals in small towns, and discovered destinations that were never on my original itinerary. None of those memories would exist if I had chosen what felt easiest or most familiar.
Travel doesn’t ask us to be fearless. It simply asks us to be willing.
The next time you’re planning a trip, leave room for spontaneity. Take the road you’ve never driven. Visit the attraction that isn’t on every “Top 10” list. Strike up a conversation with a local. Order the meal you’ve never tried before. You may discover that the experiences you never planned become the stories you tell for years to come.
This week’s challenge is simple: Do one thing on your next adventure that makes you just a little uncomfortable. It doesn’t have to be extreme—just different. Growth begins the moment you step beyond what’s familiar.
