Incline Railway Photography Tips for Better Chattanooga Photos
Use the steep tracks, moving railcar, observation deck and Lookout Mountain views to create a full visual story—not just one quick snapshot.
What Are the Best Photography Tips for Chattanooga’s Incline Railway?
Start with a window seat, use the tracks as leading lines, keep your shutter speed fast enough to handle the moving railcar and save time for photographs from the observation deck at the top of Lookout Mountain.
A smartphone works extremely well here, so you do not need specialized camera equipment to come home with memorable images.
The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is one of Chattanooga’s most distinctive photography experiences.
The historic funicular climbs Lookout Mountain at a grade that reaches 72.7%, while large windows provide changing views of the tracks, surrounding landscape and Tennessee Valley.
The ride itself takes only about 10 minutes each way, but the railway, observation deck and nearby St. Elmo neighborhood provide enough variety to create a full set of travel photographs rather than one quick snapshot.
If you are planning more Chattanooga photography stops, my Chattanooga Weekend Guide connects the Incline with Lookout Mountain attractions, railroad history, murals, downtown museums and the Tennessee Riverfront.
How Steep Is the Incline Railway?
The Incline Railway reaches a 72.7% grade near the top of Lookout Mountain, making it one of the steepest passenger railways in the world.
The railway has been operating on its current route since 1895 and is approximately one mile long.
Two counterbalanced cars travel along the track, passing one another near the middle.
That steep grade is what creates many of the railway’s best photographs.
The rails seem to drop dramatically away from the car, and the perspective becomes increasingly pronounced as you near the upper station.
Where Should You Sit for the Best Incline Railway Photos?
Choose a seat with the clearest possible view through the large windows and, when possible, sit near a corner so you can photograph both the tracks and the landscape.
The railcars have stepped seating and large windows across the sides and roof, so you can photograph from several angles even if you do not get your first-choice seat.
For the classic track photograph, aim your camera or phone directly along the rails.
The converging track creates strong leading lines that naturally pull the viewer through the frame.
What Camera Settings Work Best on the Incline Railway?
Use settings that prioritize a sharp photograph while the car is moving. The Incline travels slowly, but vibration, reflections and changing light can still cause blur.
DSLR or Mirrorless Camera Tips
Smartphone Photography Tips
Start with the standard 1x camera because it usually provides the best balance of image quality and perspective.

How Do You Photograph Through the Incline Railway Windows?
Keep your camera or phone as close to the glass as practical and photograph at a slight angle if reflections appear.
The Incline cars are enclosed but surrounded by large windows, so reflections from clothing, lights or other passengers can appear in photographs.
Wearing darker clothing can help reduce your own reflection.
You can also use your hand to shade the lens from nearby light, as long as you do not press equipment against the window or interfere with other passengers.
What Are the Best Photos to Take During the Ride?
Rather than taking dozens of nearly identical photographs, try to build a small visual story of the experience.
What Can You Photograph at the Top of Lookout Mountain?
The observation deck at the Lookout Mountain Station provides panoramic views across the Tennessee Valley and is one of the best photography locations connected with the Incline Railway.
Do not immediately board the next train back down.
Give yourself time to explore the observation area and photograph the landscape from several positions.
Point Park and several Civil War-related sites are also within walking distance of the upper station if you want to extend your photography time on Lookout Mountain.
Creative Incline Railway Photo Ideas
The steep track provides opportunities for photographs that would be difficult to create on a conventional train.
How Much Time Should You Allow?
Plan at least one hour for the full Incline Railway experience, and longer if you want time for photography or nearby Lookout Mountain sites.
The actual train ride takes approximately 10 minutes each direction, but you will also need time for boarding, the observation deck and waiting for your return departure.
If photography is a priority, give yourself extra time at the upper station rather than immediately returning down the mountain.
How Much Does the Incline Railway Cost?
As of September 30, 2026, round-trip tickets are $24.99 for adults and seniors and $12.99 for children ages 3–12.
Adults/Seniors: $24.99
Children ages 3–12: $12.99

Capacity is limited and popular dates can sell out, so purchasing tickets online ahead of time is a good idea.

What Are the Incline Railway Hours?

Is the Incline Railway Wheelchair Accessible?
Yes. The current Incline Railway railcars permit both manual and electric wheelchairs.
If accessibility is important to your visit, I would still contact the attraction before traveling to confirm current boarding procedures and any specific assistance you may need.
Incline Railway Quick Planning Guide
What Can You Photograph in St. Elmo?
St. Elmo is worth photographing before or after your Incline Railway ride.
The historic neighborhood surrounding the lower station has colorful storefronts, historic architecture, murals and small local businesses that work well for street photography and detail shots.
If you have time, walk around the immediate station area rather than leaving as soon as the ride ends.
Look for architectural details, signs, murals and everyday neighborhood scenes that provide a different visual story from the mountain views.
Incline Railway Photography FAQ
Can you take pictures on the Incline Railway?
Yes. The large windows make the Incline particularly well suited to photography with either a phone or traditional camera.
Do you need a DSLR for the Incline Railway?
No. A smartphone is more than adequate for photographing the tracks, railcar interior and views from the observation deck.
What lens is best for the Incline Railway?
A moderate wide-angle lens is useful for the tracks and railcar interior. On a phone, the standard 1x camera is a good starting point.
Is there an observation deck at the top?
Yes. The Lookout Mountain Station has an observation deck with panoramic views over the Tennessee Valley.
Does the Incline Railway go to Rock City or Ruby Falls?
No. The Incline Railway does not take passengers directly to Rock City or Ruby Falls. Both attractions are several miles away by road.
Is the Incline Railway Worth It for Photographers?
Yes. The Incline Railway combines movement, unusual perspective, historic transportation and mountain views in a way that provides far more photographic variety than a typical scenic overlook.
The strongest photographs are not necessarily the widest views.
Pay attention to the tracks, reflections, passengers, station details and changing angles as the railcar climbs and descends.
You do not need expensive equipment. A clean smartphone lens, intentional composition and a little attention to reflections and exposure can produce excellent results.
