We Planned to Stop for Lunch. Four Hours Later, We Were Still There.
When my brother Craig and I set out on our 2026 Midwest Road Trip, I had a list of Route 66 attractions I wanted to visit along the way.
The Pink Elephant Antique Mall in Livingston, Illinois was one of those planned stops.
What I didn’t expect was that it would become one of the highlights of the entire trip.
We intended to stop for lunch, browse the antique mall, take a few photos, and continue toward St. Louis.
Instead, we spent nearly four hours exploring, shopping, laughing, eating, photographing, and discovering why travelers from around the world make Pink Elephant a destination rather than simply a stop along the road.

Route 66 Fun Starts Before You Even Walk Through the Door
Before we ever stepped inside, I was already taking photographs.
Historic fiberglass giants, colorful roadside attractions, quirky statues, and plenty of Route 66 personality surround the property.
The giant pink elephant is impossible to miss, but it’s far from the only photo opportunity.
My favorite image from outside might actually be Craig sticking his head inside the mouth of one of the oversized fiberglass creatures.
Everywhere you look, there’s something fun, nostalgic, or completely unexpected.
The Pink Elephant immediately captures the playful spirit that makes Route 66 so memorable.
A Historic High School Turned Treasure Hunt
One of the things that makes Pink Elephant unique is the building itself.
The antique mall occupies the former Livingston High School, originally built in 1929.
Today, the historic school houses more than 30,000 square feet of vendor space filled with antiques, collectibles, memorabilia, vintage treasures, home décor, jewelry, advertising signs, furniture, and just about everything in between.
Walking through the building feels a little like stepping into a giant treasure hunt.
The former school setting adds character to the experience and creates a sense of history that you simply don’t find in most antique malls.
The Kind of Place That Makes You Say, “I Remember That!”
If you’re expecting a traditional antique mall focused primarily on fine antiques and furniture, Pink Elephant may surprise you.
What stood out most to me was the nostalgia.
Every aisle seemed to contain something that sparked a memory.
Old toys.
Vintage advertising.
Records.
Route 66 memorabilia.
Pop culture collectibles.
Items from decades past that instantly transport you back in time.
More than once, I found myself saying, “I remember those!”
As a photographer, I was especially drawn to the vintage camera displays.
As a collector, I somehow left with Route 66 collectibles and Star Wars figures.
Funny how that happens.
One thing I particularly appreciated was that many of the vendors also work within the store. Their knowledge and passion create a more personal shopping experience than you’ll find at many antique malls.
Meet the Family Behind the Experience
The Pink Elephant isn’t successful because of the antiques.
It’s successful because of the people.
Owners Tonia and Wayne Pickerill have transformed the business into much more than an antique mall.
Tonia originally worked for the previous owner before eventually purchasing the business with her family and helping shape it into the destination visitors experience today.
Their children are involved in the business as well, making Pink Elephant a true family operation.
What stood out most during our visit was their passion.
Tonia genuinely loves meeting travelers and sharing the story of Pink Elephant.
Wayne’s enthusiasm is impossible to miss.
Together, they have created a destination that feels welcoming, personal, and fun.
Their pride in ownership and commitment to both visitors and the local community shines through in everything they do.
A Route 66 Tradition From Around the World
One feature that immediately caught my attention was the visitor map located in the diner.
Guests are invited to place a pin showing where they’ve traveled from.
The result is a colorful display representing visitors from across the United States and around the world.
Standing in front of the map was a reminder that Route 66 isn’t just an American road trip.
It’s an international bucket-list experience.
And Pink Elephant has become one of the stops people remember.
Lunch at Twistee Treat Diner
Before exploring the rest of the property, we stopped for lunch at the Twistee Treat Diner.
The retro atmosphere immediately caught my attention.
Bright colors, classic Americana, Route 66 nostalgia, and a packed dining room created a lively and welcoming environment.
Craig ordered a Philly cheesesteak and fries.
I chose a burger and onion rings.
The burgers are made using fresh local beef that is never frozen, and the quality was noticeable.
Everything was delicious.
Then came the milkshakes.
I ordered salted caramel.
Craig chose chocolate peanut butter.
Both were outstanding.
As we looked around the diner, we couldn’t help noticing the towering sundaes and specialty ice cream creations being delivered to nearby tables.
If you’re stopping at Pink Elephant, save room for dessert.
You’ll be glad you did.
Mother Road Fudge Factory and Candy Shop
As if the diner and antique mall weren’t enough, the property also includes the Mother Road Fudge Factory and Candy Shop.
This colorful stop offers homemade fudge, vintage candy, chocolates, salt water taffy, Route 66 souvenirs, apparel, and glass bottle sodas.
Tonia invited us to sample several fudge flavors before generously sending us on our way with a block of fudge and Pink Elephant Antique Mall T-shirts.
The fudge was rich, creamy, and fresh.
Honestly, some of the best fudge I’ve ever had.
Between the candy, souvenirs, apparel, and Route 66 merchandise, it’s another place where visitors can easily spend more time than they planned.
A Photographer’s Paradise
As a travel photographer, Pink Elephant was a dream location.
The giant fiberglass figures.
The roadside Americana.
The Route 66 signs.
The colorful diner.
The nostalgic displays.
The candy shop.
The quirky statues.
The giant pink elephant.
The alien.
The oversized characters.
Everywhere I looked, there was another photograph waiting to happen.
By the time we left, I had taken well over 100 photographs at Pink Elephant alone.
Even visitors with no interest in antiques will find countless opportunities for fun photos throughout the property.
The Surprise We Never Saw Coming
Then came the biggest surprise of the day.
The Haunted School.
Before arriving, I had absolutely no idea the attraction existed.
When Tonia offered to show us around, I assumed we were getting a brief walkthrough.
Instead, Tonia, Wayne, and their son treated us to an unforgettable preview that lasted nearly 45 minutes.
Craig’s fear level?
Somewhere around a 15 on a 10-point scale.
My laughter level?
High enough that tears were rolling down my face.
What makes the Haunted School unique isn’t simply the scares.
It’s the design.
Unlike many haunted attractions that move guests through a predictable path, the traffic flow changes.
Visitors can find themselves turned around, redirected, and questioning whether they’re moving forward or backward.
The result is an experience that feels immersive, interactive, and completely unpredictable.
I won’t spoil any of the surprises.
I’ll simply say this:
If you’re anywhere near Livingston during Haunted School season, go.
Then go again.

By the time we finally walked back to the car, nearly four hours had passed.
That alone says a lot.
What makes Pink Elephant special isn’t the antique mall.

It’s Tonia, Wayne, and their family.
Their passion for what they do is woven into every corner of the property.
They genuinely love people.
They love creating experiences.
