Pigeon Forge Landmark

What Is the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel?

The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel is a 200-foot observation wheel at The Island in Pigeon Forge.

Unlike an open amusement-park Ferris wheel, riders sit inside enclosed glass gondolas that provide broad views while protecting passengers from the outdoor temperature.

The Wheel made its first turn in 2013 and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks at The Island.

Its gondolas seat up to eight people, making it possible for many families and groups to ride together rather than separating into multiple cars.

Enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas make the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel feel more protected than an open Ferris wheel.

My Biggest Question Before Riding

Is the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel Scary if You Are Afraid of Heights?

I was nervous about the height, but I found the ride much more comfortable than I expected.

Heights are something I have to manage rather than something I naturally enjoy, so I was paying close attention to how the Wheel felt once we started moving.

The enclosed gondola made a major difference for me.

Instead of feeling exposed, I was sitting inside a solid cabin with glass around me.

The Wheel also moves gradually rather than delivering sudden drops or high-speed turns.

I cannot promise that someone with a severe fear of heights will feel the same way.

For me, though, the slow movement and enclosed cabin made it possible to relax and appreciate the views.

The Reason to Ride

What Are the Views Like From the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel?

From the top of the Wheel, you get elevated views across The Island, Pigeon Forge and toward the Smoky Mountains.

On a clear day, the height makes it easier to see how the busy Parkway sits against the much larger mountain landscape.

For me, that perspective was the main reason to ride.

This is not simply an amusement ride—it is also an observation experience.

The large glass panels provide plenty of visibility from inside the gondola, making it easy to look in multiple directions without leaning over an open railing.

Day or Night?

When Is the Best Time to Ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel?

Daytime is better for seeing the mountain landscape clearly, while nighttime offers the atmosphere of The Island’s lights and the illuminated Wheel.

If scenic views and photography are your priorities, I would choose daylight or the period around sunset.

The surrounding mountains and buildings are easier to distinguish while there is still natural light.

After dark, the experience changes.

In 2026, the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel received a new lighting package that creates dynamic light displays, adding another reason to see it at night.

The Island currently offers a Day/Night Wheel Combo that includes two rides within 24 hours.

If you want both perspectives, that option lets you compare them for yourself.

Current ticket options are available through the official Great Smoky Mountain Wheel ticket page.

Comfort at 200 Feet

Is the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel Climate-Controlled?

Photography Tips

How to Photograph the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel

The Wheel gives you two different photography opportunities: photographing the landmark itself from The Island and photographing Pigeon Forge from inside the gondola.

Step farther back: Include shops, seasonal displays or the fountain to show the Wheel’s scale.
Use the gondola windows: Hold your phone or camera close to the glass to reduce reflections in elevated-view photographs.
Avoid flash through the glass: It usually creates distracting reflections.
Try sunset: You may capture mountain detail while beginning to see The Island’s lights come on.
Photograph it again after dark: The lighting turns the Wheel into a very different subject from the daytime structure.
Use vertical compositions: The Wheel’s height works especially well in portrait-format photographs.
