London can feel overwhelming when you begin planning your first visit. There are famous landmarks, historic churches, royal sites, theaters, museums, parks, pubs and countless neighborhoods competing for space on your itinerary.
I spent nine days in London with my brother on my first visit to the city, with one day reserved for a train trip to Brussels. Our priorities included famous landmarks, West End productions, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter and traditional pubs.

Planning Your First London Visit
Nine days felt right for our first visit. The longer stay gave us time to adjust after the international flight, explore without rushing and enjoy the trip before facing the flight home. Travelers with less time can still experience London, but choosing priorities becomes especially important.
We stayed at The Clermont London, Victoria. Its location beside Victoria Station made it easy to use the Underground, walk to both theaters and reach several major landmarks. Our room was large, quiet and comfortable, and the staff helped us estimate travel times and find nearby pubs and restaurants.
We walked extensively and used the Underground for longer journeys. Our Oyster cards were easy to use, and local people were kind whenever we needed directions. First-time visitors should expect stairs, fast-moving commuters and crowded stations during busier parts of the day. Travelers with mobility concerns can review current step-free access information through Transport for London.
London also felt safer and more affordable than I expected. Nothing stood out as unreasonably expensive during our trip, although costs will vary according to accommodations, attractions, dining preferences and theater seats.
My most important advice is simple: do your homework. Ask friends who have visited for their recommendations, reserve priority attractions in advance and consider guided experiences when historical context would improve the visit.
